Meet Our 2019 Executive Team

Gaurav Karna,

Director of Speakers

“Hello Everyone! It is my pleasure to be your Chair for TEDxMcGill 2019! I am a U3 Cog Sci & Comp Sci student at McGill. This year, I'm looking forward to hearing the different interpretations of our theme "Pushing the Envelope" in McGill and our community! My favourite TED talk is 'Thoughts on Humanity, Fame, and Love' by the renowned Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan because it is one of the few chances we get to know his mind and personality aside from the film screens. He speaks from the heart, and it is truly captivating. I look forward to seeing you all at TEDxMcGill 2019!”

Partha Patel,

Director of Volunteers

“Hello Everyone! I'm Partha and I'm studying Neuroscience. Currently in my U3 year, I look forward to working with our volunteer team to ensure our event this year is one we will not forget! Aside from school, I enjoy playing hockey and learning Spanish/Hindi. My favourite TED Talk was by Naja Ferjan Ramirez who spoke about growing up bilingual and the code switching that occurs between individuals who speak 2 languages; this is something I grew up with - English and Gujarati were spoken at my home interchangeably. If you have any questions, reach out. I look forward to seeing y'all at TedXMcGill 2019!”

Alex Tchurukdichian,

Director of Finance

“My name is Alexandre Tchurukdichian and I am a fourth-year student at the Desautels Faculty of Management studying Finance and International Business. By joining the Executive Team of TEDxMcGill, I am looking forward to sharing my passion for TEDx conferences with other students and learning new topics from various areas. I highly recommend watching Idriss Aberkane’s TED Talk called “Le CV de la Nature”. For twenty minutes, the Stanford teacher draws up the fabulous curriculum vitae of Nature through the notions of biomimicry and knowledge-based economy.”

Anthony Ha,

Director of Communications

Hi everyone! My name is Anthony Ha, and I am a third-year McGill student studying Anatomy and Cell Biology. I am excited to join the Executive Team this year, and I hope to share my passion for TEDx and their "ideas worth spreading". One TED talk that I really liked was "What I learned from 100 days of rejection by Jia Jiang". Everyone fears rejection. Often times, it makes us doubt what we are able to do without knowing the actual reason. For 100 days, Jiang explores this phenomenon and tries to find the reason why he gets rejected.

Alex Benlolo,

Director of Logistics

Hello everyone! My name is Alex Benolo, and I am in U1 studying Comp Sci. I found the talk "Your Brain Hallucinates Your Conscious Reality" by Anil Seth particularly interesting because it put things into perspective and made me realize that we are ultimately the determiner of our happiness. Plus, he talks about some really interesting psychological phenomena! I can’t wait to hear all the interesting talks and make the most out of, what’s sure to be, an amazing event!

Talissa El Khoury,

Director of Communications

Hi there! My name is Talissa, and I am a U3 McGill student studying Political Science and History. I recently listened to this fascinating talk called ‘How boredom can lead to your most brilliant ideas’ by Manoush Zomorodi. Her talk will help you become more conscious of the amount of times you pick up your phone in a day to prevent boredom, and how that’s preventing you from developing your most creative ideas! This year, I am excited to hear some incredible talks and get inspired!

Lucia Winter

Director of Sponsorships

"Hi everyone, my name is Lucia Winter, and I'm a U2 Poli Sci & Management student at McGill. I love "Confessions of a Bad Feminist" by Roxane Gay because she argues that while it is important to hold ourselves and others accountable, she does not believe in the pursuit of moral perfection among activists because the work itself is most important. She urges one to ask, instead: "What am I doing to further positive change? How may I do better to the extent of my power?" I believe those are the most important questions.

I am looking forward to liaising with audience members, volunteers, and potential sponsors at this year's conference!"

Hafsa Khalid

Director of Logistics

"Hello everyone! My name is Hafsa, and I am a U4 McGill student majoring in Comp Sci. One TED talk that I'd recommend is "A tale of mental illness" by Elyn Saks. I'm excited for this year's conference, and I hope to see you all there!"
